Military scholarship available
The Big Island Retired Military Association (BIRMA) will be awarding a $2,000 scholarship in memory of Mark Allen Traxler, the son of one of the group’s members.
Applicants must be graduating Hawaii seniors whose parent, grandparent or guardian is active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired from the U.S. military service. This includes Coast Guard. Students who have completed two years in a JROTC or Civil Air Patrol program are also eligible, regardless of their parents’ military service status.
A minimum 3.0 GPA is required and scholarships can only be applied to accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Students who express interest in pursuing military or government service careers will be given priority consideration.
Letter of recommendation, transcripts and proof of parent’s military service are among the requirements.

Grants available for school beautification
The Cooke Foundation is seeking nominations for the Cooke Beautification Award, which recognizes public schools for completing significant beautification projects on campus. Three grants of $5,000 each will be awarded to an elementary, middle and high school.
The biennial award, first presented in 2008, has honored schools across the state for contributing to the overall appearance and ambiance of their campuses through murals, landscaping, gardens, mosaics and other enhancement projects.
All public schools in the state, including charter schools, are eligible to nominate by Sept. 2 completed beautification projects that demonstrate significant improvement of the property.

Kamehameha Schools early college scholarship applications available
Applications the Kamehameha Schools Early College Scholarship program are being accepted through April 28 for students attending eligible high schools in West Hawaii, looking to participate in early college credit opportunities.
Eligible students must attend Honokaa High School, Kanu O Ka Aina, Kealakehe High School, Ke Kula o Ehunuikaimalino High School, Kohala High School or Konawaena High School. The scholarship funds high school students enrolled in college course work at any UH system campus.
Informational sessions are planned for interested students. The first will be at 8:30 a.m. March 13 at Honokaa High School. On March 14, there will be info sessions at Ehunuikaimalino High School at 8:45 a.m. and at Konawaena High School at 10 a.m. Kohala High School will host two sessions at 8:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on March 15. A final session is planned at 9 a.m. March 31 at Kanu O Ka Aina.

Salvation Army raises $802,158 through Red Kettle Program
The Salvation Army – Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division raised $802,158.18 throughout Hawaii and the Pacific via its annual Red Kettle campaign. There were 24,438 Angel Tree gifts distributed.
In addition, Central Pacific Bank collected more than $158,000 in monetary and gift donations for the Angel Tree program. And, Burger King Hawaii, in partnership with Aloha United Way, collected more than $4,100 in monetary donations to support the keiki portion of the program.
