Stanley Palama Sr.

Stanley Kaulana Palama Sr. 71, of Hilo died Dec. 15, 2016. Born Aug. 26, 1945, in Koloa, Kauai, he retired as a heavy equipment operator for the Local 3 Union.

A service will be from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 17 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo.

He is survived by son, Stanley (Shanell) Palama Jr. of Hilo; daughters, Makalapua (Everett) Goins of Oahu, Mokihana (Queeny) Danielson and Mikiala Palama, all of Hilo; sister, Linda Fountain of Oahu; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Clyde Canida

Clyde “Aku” Timoteo Canida, 68, of Keaau died Feb. 2, 2017, at Pohai Malama. Born in Punene, Maui, he was an iron worker.

A visitation will take place from 9-10 a.m. Feb. 18 at New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo with a 10 a.m. celebration of life. Family requests casual attire. Condolences may be posted at homelanimemorialpark.com.

He is survived by sons, Aaron (Princess) Canida, Gavin Canida, all of Hilo; sisters, Loretta Viduya of Pearl City, Oahu, Stephanie (Glenn) Eugenio of Mililani, Oahu, Charladine (Patrick) Duhay of Arizona; brothers, Francis (Bobo) Lo of Kaneohe, Oahu; Llewellyn (Darlene) Canida of Aiea, Oahu; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Raphael Kaainoa

Raphael Kiyoto Kaainoa, 76, of Honokaa died Jan. 30 at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Hilo, he was a retired plumbing specialist at HPM Building Supply, former machinist for McDonnell Douglas and a numeric control programmer in the Aerospace Industry.

Visitation will be from 10–11 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission; memorial service at 11. Aloha attire.

He is survived by wife, Joan Kaainoa of Honokaa; daughter, Ruth (Thom) Thomas of Mission Viejo, California; sons, Joseph Kaainoa of Gilbert, Arizona, Mark (Christina) Kaainoa of Hilo; mother, Doris Kaainoa of Montebello, Calif.; sister, Rachael Sakado of Carson Calif.; brothers, Stephen (Barbara) Kaainoa of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., Phillip (Diann) Kaainoa of Arcadia, Calif.; one grandson, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

George Yokoyama

George Yokoyama, 90, of Mountain View died Jan. 22, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired executive director for the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, a World War II Army veteran, recently honored as a Living Treasure of Hawaii and with A Key to the County, commissioner for the State Land Board, Public Housing Authority, Children and Youth, and Panaewa-Keaukaha Housing Committee, executive for National Association of Community Action Programs, delegate to the National Democratic Party, county precinct official and member of Hawaii Island Labor Alliance and Waiakea Lions Club.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 4 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Mieko Yokoyama of Mountain View; son, Paul (Nicole) Yokoyama of Keaau; one granddaughter; two nieces.

Robert Schmidt

Robert “Bob” Ernest Schmidt, 90, of Waikoloa died Feb. 2, 2017, at his residence. Born Feb. 23, 1926, in New York City, N.Y., he was a retired executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, whose career also included YMCAs several states. He was also an Army Air Corps veteran.

He is survived by wife, Barbara Schmidt of Waikoloa; sons, David (Janet) Schmidt of Hawi, Bruce Schmidt of Escondido, Calif., Bradly (Anne) Schmidt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Sheri (Stephen Dunn) Schmidt of Foster City, Calif.; brother, Everett Schmidt of Brevard, N.C.; five grandchildren, a great-grandson; a niece; numerous nieces and nephews.
