KAILUA-KONA — The man police say was driving drunk when he allegedly struck and killed a 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man in 2015 is still wanted on a bench warrant nearly three months after being indicted by a Big Island grand jury.
KAILUA-KONA — The man police say was driving drunk when he allegedly struck and killed a 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man in 2015 is still wanted on a bench warrant nearly three months after being indicted by a Big Island grand jury.
A $10,000 bench warrant issued Nov. 16, the day after the grand jury indicted Justin Rohan for second-degree negligent homicide, driving without a license and reckless driving remains outstanding as of Friday, a Hawaii Police Department spokeswoman said.
Rohan, 26 at the time and a Kailua-Kona resident, was reportedly driving a green 2007 Ford pickup truck west on Kaiminani Drive while intoxicated when he crossed the centerline near Laui Street and crashed head-on into a 2003 Nissan SUV driven by Robert Weinstock on Aug. 3, 2015.
Both drivers were taken to Kona Community Hospital, where Weinstock was officially pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m.
Rohan was subsequently arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released from police custody, pending investigation, while receiving treatment at the hospital. The three-count indictment was handed down more than a year after the crash on Nov. 15.
Robert Weinstock was well-known in the community. He was a customer service representative and trainer for United Airlines, who also worked as office manager and actor for Island Breeze Productions. In addition, he was a part of the University of the Nations, Team Extreme, a security coordinator for the Ironman Triathlon, participated in the Relay for Life and American Heart Association, and was an Army veteran.
