Kathleen Solomon
Kathleen Solomon, 71, of Ocean View died Dec. 4, 2016, at her residence. Born Sept. 1, 1945, in Milwaukee, she was a physical education teacher in Wisconsin and Sacramento, Calif., and was a preschool teacher at Hookena Elementary School. She was a member of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church and danced hula with Na Kupuna O Pohue.
A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 92-8606 Paradise Circle mauka in Ocean View. Private burial services will be held later.
She is survived by cousins, Joanne Hafner, Thomas (Pam Grant) Andrews, R. Paul Chavez, and Patty (Steve) Brink, all of Wisconsin; caregiver, Erlinda (Aby) Laasaga of Kailua-Kona.

Franklin Carvalho
Franklin ‘Bobo’ Carvalho, 68, died Jan. 22, 2017, at home in Sanger, Calif. Born April 2, 1948, in North Kohala, he was a Vietnam war Navy veteran and had a career in construction and power generation.
A celebration of life will be from 9 a.m. to noon March 4 at Mattos’ pasture on Union Mill Road in Kapau. A luncheon will follow.
He is survived by wife, Karen Carvalho; children, David (Sandy) Carvalho and Berwyn (Johnnalyn Sanborn) Carvalho, both of Hilo; Lesmond (Kalai) Carvalho-Asuela, Naheana Keahi, both of Maui; Soo-Jin (David) Laanui of Woodbury, Minn., Robert Chilton of Folsom, Calif.; siblings, Jeannine (Wendell) Mattos, Andrea (Mapuana) Carvalho, Mildred (Carter) Carvalho, Alan (Tracey) Carvalho, Anthony (Jackie) Carvalho; 12 grandchildren.

Fred Koehnen
Fred Koehnen, 92, of Hilo died Feb. 1, 2017, at his residence. Born Feb. 24, 1924, in Hilo, he was a businessman, securities broker, consultant, and a veteran of the Army Air Corp during World War II and the Hawaii National Guard during Vietnam. He was a director on the Hilo Medical Center Foundation Board and a trustee of the Lyman House Memorial Museum, the Hilo Boarding School, the Herbert C. Shipman Foundation, and the Orlando Lyman Charitable Trust.

He is survived by spouse, Carolyn Koehnen of Hilo; daughters, Lynne Forbes, Helie (G.A.) Rock, all of Hilo, Kristi (Gary) Robinson of Kapolei, Oahu; son, Owen Koehnen of Hilo; sister, Helie Rohner of Hilo; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; niece and nephew.
Jean Ells
Jean Hiroko Ells, 94, of Hilo died Jan. 20, 2017. Born Jan. 19, 1923, in Hilo, she taught third grade at St. Joseph’s Elementary and completed her career teaching at Hilo Union School. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
