Kona Coffee Living History Farm offers yoga

Kona Historical Society invites the public to its Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook for yoga classes by instructor Elizabeth “Liz” Aschenbrenner.

The class will be offered from 7:30-8:45 a.m. this Friday, from 8-9:30 a.m. Feb. 10, from 7:30-8:45 a.m. Feb. 17 and from 8-9:30 a.m. Feb. 24.

These drop in outdoor hatha yoga classes are for beginners and experts. Kona Historical Society has a couple of yoga mats for those who do not have one. The class costs $10 each for nonmembers or free for members. Annual Kona Historical Society membership starts at $35 and information is available at www.konahistorical.org/index.php/khs/membership.

Hawaiian language presentation planned

Hawaiian language professor Puakea Nogelmeier will give a presentation on Hawaiian literacy as part of the ongoing President’s Speakers Series from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday at Hawaii Community College – Palamanui.

Nogelmeier, a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will present “The Legacy of Hawaiian Literacy – Today? Illuminating Hawaiian Knowledge.” The event is free.

Nogelmeier is the founder and executive director of Awaiaulu, a nonprofit translation training entity, and is also the director of UH’s Institute of Hawaiian Language Research and Translation.

VFW activities announced

VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street will serve onion burgers with salad and a dessert for $5 on Friday. The public is welcome.

On Super Bowl Sunday, doors will open at 10 a.m. for the 1:30 p.m. kick off. Attendees should bring a dish to share for the potluck.

Boy Scouts sponsor Scout Sunday services

Cub Scouts Pack No. 12 will sponsor a Scout Sunday Celebration this Sunday at the Kona Hongwanji Temple in Kealakekua. Lt. Col. Christopher Marquez, Garrison Commander, U.S. Army Garrison-Pohakuloa will be the guest speaker.

Light refreshments will be served at 8 a.m. prior to the service. Services start at 9 a.m. The public is invited.

Chaminade University STEM scholarship available

Chaminade University is accepting applications for its full tuition Hooulu STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) scholarships. The scholarships are open to first-year and transfer students, and gives preference to applicants of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Application deadline is March 1.

In partnership with Kamehameha Schools, Chaminade University created this opportunity for students pursuing a bachelor of science degree to receive full tuition assistance and the opportunity to apply for living expense assistance for four years. It also provides academic support services, access to post-graduate career paths, paid internships for professional development and financial support for career development activities.
