KAILUA-KONA — Court proceedings have been put on hold in the case against a 34-year-old Kailua-Kona man charged with attempted murder and felony assault stemming from an Oct. 28 beating off Henry Street.
Kona Circuit Court Judge Melvin Fujino on Jan. 5 granted a motion filed by attorney Michael Schlueter on behalf of his client Anthony “Tony” Beaudet-Close to suspend all proceedings pending a mental health examination conducted by a panel of three doctors.
Beaudet-Close is next due in court on March 15 for a hearing on the findings of the examiners.
Beaudet-Close was slated to go on trial March 14 after pleading not guilty to second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in November. He remains in custody in lieu of $150,000 bail.
The charges filed against Beaudet-Close stem from Oct. 28 of last year when police and prosecutors allege that the 34-year-old assaulted a 39-year-old man who was sent to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
The man, whom West Hawaii Today is not identifying because he is a victim, suffered a traumatic brain injury and a subdural hematoma causing coma, and multiple facial fractures. During a Nov. 14 preliminary hearing, a victim counselor with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, said he was unable to be testify because he was still unresponsive.
