Joann Duggan
Joann Ayako Duggan, 92, of Hilo died Jan. 11, 2017, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Aug. 17, 1924, in Nagaski, Japan, she was retired sales clerk at Hilo Hatties and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church and Urasenke School of Japanese Tea Ceremony.
A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Jan. 28 at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Hilo, with a 10 a.m. service. A burial service will be held at noon Jan. 30 at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire requested.
There are no known survivors.

Carolina Madrid
Carolina “Kathrine” Simeon Madrid, 91, of Hilo died Jan. 15, 2017, at home. Born April 22, 1925, in Honolulu, she was a former clerk typist for the Federal Aviation Administration and a homemaker. She was also a member of Hawaii Island Adult Care and the Wailea/Hakalau Kumiai.
Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Jan. 28 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo, with an 11 a.m. funeral service. Private burial services will be held at a later date. A celebration of life potluck luncheon will follow at the Griep’s residence in Hakalau. Aloha/casual attire.
She is survived by sons, George (Elaine) Madrid, Gary Madrid, app of Oahu and Gilbert Madrid of Hilo; daughters, Carolina (David) Griep of Hakalau and Cecilia Madrid of Oahu; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Steve Kruse
Steve B. Kruse, 60, of Puna died Dec. 30, 2016, at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a carpenter and a member of New Hope – Puna.
A Celebration of His Life will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 28 at New Hope – Puna. Casual attire.
He is survived by wife, Rachel; children, Kahea (Shaolin), Kanani (Reggie), Bradley (Ashley), Jasmine, Frank (Kat) and Nicole; two brothers; two sisters; seven grandchildren; five nieces; four nephews.

Gerald Makino
Gerald Hiroshi Makino, 66, of Hilo died Dec. 21, 2016, at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Olaa, he was a retired accountant with the County of Hawaii Fire Department. He was also a member of the East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai and a volunteer with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Friends may from 2:30-4 p.m. Jan. 28 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 4 p.m. service. The family requests casual attire be worn.
He is survived by wife, Carol Yamada Makino of Hilo; daughter, Kelli Makino of Honolulu; son, Gareth Makino of Hilo; brothers, Eugene Makino of Honolulu, Vernon Makino of Keaau; aunts; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dolores Natividad
Dolores “Aunty Dud” Buyuan Natividad, 75, Pahala died Jan. 9, 2017, at Hale Hoola Hamakua. Born April 24, 1941, in Pahala, she was school aide for Ka’u High and Pahala Elementary School and a cleaning plant aide for the former Ka’u Agribusiness.
Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Jan. 28 at Naalehu Assembly of God with a 10 a.m. service. Burial to follow at Naalehu Community Cemetery. Casual attire.
She is survived by sons, Bryan (Lena) Davis-Natividad, Darren (Ann) Natividad, Jeffrey (Becky) Natividad and Brendon (Melba) Natividad; daughters, Darleen (Ricky) Iida, Priscilla (Wade) Espejo and Maelyne (Vernon) Evangelista; sister, Gloria Panglao; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rachel Leite
Rachel Ami Leite, 30, of Hilo died Jan. 11, 2017, at Straub Clinic &Hospital on Oahu. She was born June 2, 1986, in Hilo.
Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Jan. 31 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo with a 10 a.m. funeral service. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire.
She is survived by son, Matthew Leite of Hilo; companion, Joshua Heneralau of Hilo; parents, Michael and Darcy Malia Leite of Hilo; brothers, Michael Leite of California, Daniel (Jalayna) Leite of Hilo, Joel (Leissa Horiuchi) Leite of Honolulu; grandmother, Dorothy Leite of Hilo; grandfather, David Pitman of Hilo; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

James Chinen
James “Dosay” Isamu Chinen, 68, of Hilo died Dec. 18, 2016, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hakalau, he was a retired auto mechanic and had served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Private services were held.
He is survived by stepdaughter, Kori Imai of Kona; stepson, Kristopher Imai of Kona; mother, Kimiko Chinen of Hilo; sisters, Eriko (David) Kurashige of Torrance, Calif., Julie Chinen and Kathy (Tashiro) Okunami of Hilo, Ruth (Dennis) Sevilla of Modesto, Calif.; brothers, George (Pam) Chinen and Matsu (Cheryle) Uehara Jr. of Hilo, Donald (Cynthia) Uehara of Los Angeles; numerous nieces and nephews.

James Nishimura Jr.
James “Jim” J.K. Nishimura Jr., 80, of Hilo died Jan. 7, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a retired police officer for the Hawaii County Police Department, a Marine Corps Korean War veteran, and member of SHOPO.
Private services were held.
He is survived by wife, Geraldine Nishimura of Hilo; sons, Jay Nishimura, Steven (Elizabeth) Nishimura, both of Honolulu, Kenneth Nagata of Hilo; daughters, Carie Thornton of Sacramento, Calif., Amy (Burt) Tsuchiya of Hilo, Susan (Mark) Yuen of Honolulu; sister, Susanna (William) Takasaki of Honolulu; 10 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Garcie Kiser
Garcie Herschel Kiser, 89, of Kailua-Kona died Jan. 15, 2017, in Olympia, Wash. Born in Pound, Va., he was a World War II Navy veteran, a Michigan state police officer, and owner of several motorcycle dealerships in California, Washington and on Maui and the Big Island,
A celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks.
He is survived by wife, Jean Kiser; sons, Kevin, Kerry, Kris Kiser; daughter, D. Marie Kiser Smith; sisters, Gaye West and Eloise Johnson; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Michael Napolitano
Michael Anthony Napolitano, 43, of Mountain View died Dec. 17, 2016, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Aug. 26, 1973, in New York, he worked as a carpenter.

Donald Nigro
Donald Lee Nigro, 70, died Jan. 17, 2017, at a private care facility in Hilo. Born in 1946 in Kansas City, Mo., he was a prize winning former playwright and antiques and coin dealer in Hilo.
He is survived by brother, Anthony Nigro, two nieces and three grandnephews.
