A man apparently drowned while swimming Sunday in waters off Kehena Beach in Puna.
Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel responded shortly after noon to a report of a swimmer in distress and possible drowning, officials said. When personnel arrived at the remote beach about 20 minutes later, bystanders told them a man was last scene face down in the water near a rock outcropping on the south side of the beach.
Personnel aboard a Jet Ski located the man floating in about 30 feet of water approximately 100 yards offshore of where he was last scene, the department said. The body was retrieved and brought to shore. Medics, escorted by police, transported the body to Hilo Medical Center.
