Kona Literacy Center has moved

Kona Literacy Center has moved to Bougainvillea Plaza, 75-5656 Kuakini Highway, Suite 102B.

Kona Literacy Center has provided free, one-on-one tutoring for adults for years. If you or someone you know wants to get better at reading or writing, call 329-1180 or email konalit@hawaiiliteracy.org for more information.

For those interested in becoming adult literacy tutors, two-day training will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 7 and 14 at West Hawaii Civic Center. Pre-registration is required.

Louis named to college dean’s list

Pulamanamauu Louis of Kailua-Kona has been named to the dean’s list at Graceland University for the fall term. Students with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.64 are named to the dean’s list.

Freemasons meet

The monthly Stated Meeting of Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will be Wednesday at the Kona Masonic Center, 73-5577 Kauhola St., Suite 7, Kailua-Kona.

Dinner begins at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. and dessert will be served after the meeting. All members of the craft are invited to the dinner and meeting.

Alzheimer’s Association events planned

The Alzheimer’s Association has several events planned in January.

Chris Ridley will present “What Is Dementia?” at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at the Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road, Kailua-Kona. This seminar will include the latest information on the warning signs of dementia. Information on stages, symptoms and treatments will be provided.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Regency, Ridley will present “Legal Affairs and Dementia” This presentation will discuss dementia and potential legal needs, legal capacity, advance health care directives, financial planning and organizing legal financial affairs. At 11 a.m. that day, the movie “Memories of Tomorrow” starring Ken Watanabe about the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease will be shown. At 1 p.m., Ridley will present “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia,” which includes information on why behaviors occur and possible interventions.

The “What Is Dementia,” workshop will also be given at 9 a.m. Jan. 21 at Tutu’s House in Waimea. The “Memories of Tomorrow” movie will be shown at 11 a.m. that day. The “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia” workshop will be at 1 p.m.

Kailua-Kona Seniors meet

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai.

Attendees should bring suggestions for speakers, excursions, arts and crafts games and plans for 2017. New officers will be introduced. Dues for 2017 are payable at this time.
