KAILUA-KONA — Hele-On bus service on Hawaii Island is about to get a little cleaner.

As part of its Diesel Emission Reduction Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sending $200,000 in federal funding to the Hawaii Department of Health to replace two diesel-powered buses with lower-emission buses, according to a press release from the office of Sen. Mazie Hirono.

Hawaii County will pick up the remaining tab to purchase the two new buses.

Also according to the release, the EPA’s reduction program is expected to reduce fine particulate matter emissions, smog-forming nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide by 1.1 tons, 16.6 tons and 4.7 tons, respectively, over the lifetime of the buses.
