I was deeply saddened to see Sean “Peaman” Pagett getting harassed by the employees of the DLNR at the last Peaman race.

Peaman races have been a part of me, my family and Kona for almost 30 years. These races are not races which people come to enter to “race,” these races are a time for people, families and visitors to get together. We have some laughs, fun and yes, we get a workout in. The last I checked, the ocean was a free place to swim. Alii Drive was a free place to run. Can’t a bunch of like-minded people get together and have a fun workout/race day once a month? I know many visitors really enjoy seeing this free community event. Often, they jump in and join us.
Peaman started these races 29 years ago as just a fun way to get a workout in. What started as a group of 15-20 adults has grown into a super fun community and family event. No one is charged or makes money. In fact, Peaman spends much of his own money for toys and prizes that he gives out to the kids at the races. No one really cares about the times, although it is nice to see your times and names listed in the paper. You know, bragging rights! Often, Peaman races introduce many to the sport of fitness, especially our youth. Due to the low key, no pressure, easy to do race — it is all about being active and giving it your best.
There are very few community events that a family can do together that promote health, fitness, fun and camaraderie like the Peaman events. No sign-ups, easy courses. Like Peaman says, if there isn’t a course for you, we will make one. It would be a shame to lose this treasured activity in our community.
Please DLNR, let the Peaman races go on as they have for almost 30 years.
They are only once a month. Peaman schedules are posted so the community can be informed. In fact, come join us, bring your family and see for yourself how great these times together are!
