WAIMEA — Started by Parker Rancher owner Richard Smart in 1962, the tradition of lighting the giant Cook Island Pine tree in his front yard at Puuopelu continued in its 54th year on Friday night. The tree was originally planted prior to 1879.

More than 200 people attended the event with free hot chocolate and Christmas cookies for all. Students from HPA Handbell Choir, Waimea Elementary, Punana Leo o Waimea, and Parker School performed inside.

The Parker Ranch staff continue the tradition as a way of giving back to the Waimea community.
