Bird walks offered at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park
Bird walks will be offered on Friday, Nov. 25 and on Dec. 2 at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park.
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the park visitor center, Hale Hookipa. Dr. Marie Morin, conservation biologist and board member of The Wildlife Society Hawaii Chapter will lead the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2-hour walks. Bring closed-toed shoes, hat, sunscreen, water and snacks, binoculars and Hawaii bird field guides. Both walks will cover the same area and will focus on viewing wildlife, including migratory shorebirds along the coast and endangered waterbirds at Aimakapa Fishpond.
Time for the Joann Williams Christmas craft fair
The 34th annual Joann Christmas Treasures Art, Jewelry, Gift and Craft Fair will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m Friday, Nov. 25 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
This event features the best vendors from all over Hawaii with exclusive items, including jams, jewelry, art, clothing, accessories, household items, quilts, flower arrangement and wreaths.
Admission is free and donated prizes from each vendor will be given away throughout both days.
This fair is designed to promote island artists and craftspeople and several nonprofit organizations.
Master gardener class coming up
The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service is accepting applications for the 2017 Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program for home gardeners until Dec. 9. The course begins Jan. 24 and is held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through mid April at the Kona Extension Office in Kainaliu.
Topics include basic botany, native Hawaii plants, invasive species, tropical ornamental plants, plant nutrition, soil fertility and nutrient management, insect and plant disease management, plant propagation and pruning, fruit and vegetable crops, organic gardening and diagnosing plant health problems.

Aloha Grown Malama Honua Fund offers grants
The Aloha Grown Malama Honua Fund is giving away five $500 awards to area nonprofits, schools, organizations or initiatives on Hawaii Island that embody Aloha Grown’s philosophy to support local, sustain the aina and share the aloha.
Interested groups must complete an application and write a one-page essay explaining how their organization follows Aloha Grown’s philosophy. Essays must include the organization’s mission and vision, along with the specific project the $500 award would be used to fund.
Submissions are due by Dec. 31. Recipients will be contacted by Jan. 31.

Friends of the Future receives OHA grant
An Office of Hawaiian Affairs Ahahui grant in the amount of $4,500 has been awarded to Friends of the Future, and specifically to its Baby STEPS to Stronger Big Island Families program, to help support its annual conference.
“Celebrating 10 Years; Full STEAM Ahead” is the theme for the 10th annual Hawaii Island Early Childhood Conference scheduled for April 28 and 29 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
The conference is open to anyone who works in or has an interest in the field of early childhood education and sponsorships like this grant from OHA allow organizers to keep costs affordable for the 400 attendees.
