Highway is a mess

Highway is a mess

Have any council members traveled on Highway 11 from Captain Cook to Honalo? Difficult for me to believe they have!

The highway is full of holes, rutted, everything that happens when highway maintenance is ignored. The new intersection at the Napoopoo is quite spectacular and going north, of course, you wind up on a holey, rutted road. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Bad drivers everywhere

It is so disgusting when morons think that they are above the law when it comes to the rules of the road, especially when they are driving through a school zone (or texting or talking on cellphones)!

Furthermore, these narrow, winding roads are no place for so-called athletes to be exercising on their bicycles. My heart goes out to Ulu’s mother and their whole family.

Doesn’t add up to real support

Several letters printed since the Trump electoral college victory use a phrase like “the people have spoken.”

But take a look at the numbers. Current tallies show just below 58 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2016 election. Of those, approximately 47 percent went to each Trump and Clinton so the winner was chosen by only 26 percent of those who could have participated.

In other words, three out of four voters either picked someone other than Trump or chose not to vote at all — not exactly a ringing endorsement and far from a mandate, in my opinion.

I challenge that accusation on Obama

I challenge Mr. Rabi to cite specific examples to prove his statement that President Obama is a “disgrace” and is responsible for “setting race relations back 50 years.” I’ve heard this said by other conservatives yet have never been told the specific things the president has said or done that were disgraceful or racially divisive.

In 2008, more than 69 million Americans elected our first African-American president. (Please note: This is the highest number of votes ever won by a presidential candidate.) Such a result seemed to indicate that the American electorate had become more open and accepting of our differences with regard to race. Boy, was I wrong!

First came outright rudeness to the president (the “you lie!” shout). Then the baseless birther movement started by Mr. Trump, the women labeling the first lady “shocking” and “shameful” for wearing sleeveless tops revealing so much skin, the un-patriotic Congressional obstructionism, the right-wing pundits exclaiming “Now they’re telling us what to eat!” when Michelle Obama urged kids to exercise, grow vegetable gardens and be healthier, etc. Sounds a lot like racism to me.

My gut tells me the true disgrace in their eyes is that a black family has been living in the(ir) White House!

So, Mr. Rabi, prove me wrong. Please write again and this time include facts that support your statements. Do not simply parrot your Fox TV newsreaders.
