Thanksgiving program a holiday treat
Thanksgiving program a holiday treat
I have been witnessing a certain phenomenon in Kona for 14 years now and I am deeply moved by it and am now finally making a public comment. I am proud of the people of Kona for coming up with this and for having the kind of environment that has allowed this project to spring up and thrive.
It’s the Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith musical program. It was started 15 years ago, I understand, and when my husband and I moved here with our children in 2002 I was totally amazed that this was happening, because I have never heard of it happening anywhere else. I truly believe this is a substantial step toward world peace, on the local level, because it genuinely embraces all — not only is there a wide range of faiths and/or disciplines, but it is hosted in alternating locations, either churches or temples, and not only that, the only donation requested of attendees is a donation to the food bank. So it is also serving the community in another way.
I felt compelled to write about this because once again we are preparing for this year’s event and once again I am so filled with appreciation for the warm hearts of all the participants. In these troubled times, it is great to experience the goodness of the people in your own community. Thank you, people of Kona!

Letters can’t go unchallenged
Regarding recent letters to the editor written by Lisa Christensen of Waimea (“We are a dangerous laughing stock”) and Janis Clark of Kailua-Kona (My Turn), I have a few points to make.
Lisa, I don’t know what world you live in, but you are the most negative person in America or maybe on the planet! You are very quick to judge someone who has not yet even started his term! Keep your negativity to yourself!
That goes for Janis Clark, whom I guess is happy the way Obama ran our country for the last eight years. I’ll bet both of you voted for crooked Hillary! Who will probably be changing her $5,000 suit for orange coveralls.

Should have gone into politics
A young woman with five small children had no food, and a week to wait before her meek pay would arrive in the mail. So needing to feed her family she took enough food to last the week — she had every intent to pay the owner back as soon as she could.
However, she was found out before and was charged with the crime. She was sentenced and charged with cost and time served. Wow!
If only she had been a politician.

Mahalo, Sandi
I want to recognize and give a big “thank you” to Sandi Coit who recently retired from the Hawaii Island Humane Society after 16 years. The island animals could not have asked for a better friend and advocate. She worked at both the Kona and Waimea shelters and pretty much did every job that needed to be done at one time or another. Mahalo, Sandi, for all your great work.
