The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the Department of Land and Natural Resources bought 635 acres of watershed land in the Kalauao Valley from Bishop Museum for $760,000.
State and federal grants funded the purchase.
The department’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife scheduled a meeting Wednesday for people to provide input on the proposal to add the land to the Ewa Forest Reserve.
Division administrator David Smith said the land is home to parts of the popular Aiea Loop and Ridge hiking trails.
He said in a statement that these trails are among the few places on Oahu to see native forests and birds in their habitat.
