American soprano and operatic crossover star Alyson Cambridge comes to the Big Island for two shows benefiting Aloha Performing Arts Company and Kahilu Theatre.

Cambridge has been hailed by critics as “radiant, vocally assured, dramatically subtle and compelling, and artistically imaginative” (Washington Post), and has been noted for her “powerful, clear voice” (New York Times) and “revelatory, sensual, smoky readings” (Opera News). Her rich, warm voice combined with her strikingly beautiful stage presence and affecting musical and dramatic interpretation, have brought her over a decade of successes on the world’s leading opera and concert stages.

“Alyson is a luminous soprano who is increasingly winning hearts across the globe with her poignant Broadway work,” said Kahilu Theatre Executive Director Deb Goodwin. “The program will include operatic selections by Puccini and Bizet, classical songs, and a fun mix of musical theater, pop and jazz standards from her new album ‘Until Now.’ She will be accompanied by Sean Rogers on Kahilu’s Steinway piano.”

The first performance is 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at a private residence in Kona, and the second is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at Kahilu Theatre.

Both performances are in collaboration with the Hoku Concert Series, which presents world-class voices semi-annually, according to founder, Frank Meyer. The Nov. 11 performance benefits Aloha Performing Arts Company while the Nov. 12 performance benefits Kahilu Theatre.

Cambridge last performed on the Big Island a dozen years ago, Meyer said.

“Twelve years ago, every guest at the concert benefit, Kukio resort, for Kona Hospital and North Hawaii Community Hospital starring Alyson Cambridge, asked when will she return for an encore show,” he said. “Due to her busy schedule performing in America and abroad, it has been a long wait.”

Tickets for the Nov. 11 performance in Kona are $100 via www.apachawaii.org or by calling 322-9924. Tickets for the Nov. 12 performance at Kahilu Theatre are $133 and available for purchase online at www.kahilutheatre.org or by calling 885-6868.
