Firefighters remained at the scene Thursday morning, dousing hot spots and flareups within the area, which Pahala Fire Station Capt. Mike Murray was contained at the time.
The burn area is located on the makai said of Ninole Loop, below the Sea Mountain Colony One condominiums in Punaluu. Murray said the fire approached the roadway, but firefighters were able to keep it from crossing. A portion of the Sea Mountain Golf Course is located between the roadway and the condos.
Firefighters were sent to the area, located south of Punaluu Beach Park off Highway 11 in Ka’u, shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Upon their arrival, the fire had already consumed 1.5 acres and was being fanned by strong north-northeasterly winds. Personnel were able to get the upper-hand wetting down the area and kept the fire to 4 acres.
Two firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the fire. Murray said another two firefighters would monitor the fire throughout Thursday.
