Arbor Day plant includes native trees

An Arbor Day plant sale is planned from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife Kamuela State Tree Nursery, at 66-1220-A Lalamilo Road in Waimea.

The sale features native and nonnative trees and shrub seedlings, with prices ranging from $1 to $13 depending on pot size. Sales are cash only and plants are available on a first come first served basis.

Sale items will mostly feature native plants such as koa, native hibiscus species, sandalwood, cypress and pines.

Learn to cook healthy food at chef demonstration

Chef Stephen Rouelle of Under the Bodhi Tree, will demonstrate how to make easy, delicious and healthy recipes from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kealakekua Ranch Center Heritage Hall in Captain Cook.

The ChoiceMart Chef Series event is planned in conjunction with Diabetes Awareness Month. Attendees will discover how vegetarian and vegan diets can help reduce risk of diabetes and help manage the disease. Food samples will be offered.

Operation Christmas Child boxes collected in West Hawaii

Several sites will collect Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child donated shoeboxes in West Hawaii.

Filled with school supplies, hygiene items, notes of encouragement and toys, the boxes will be delivered to children in need around the world. This year, Hawaii Island hopes to contribute more than 9,700 shoebox gifts toward the 2016 global goal of reaching 12 million children. For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received.

Boxes may be dropped off at Living Stones Church, 76-6224 Alii Drive from 3-6 p.m. Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15, 3-6 p.m. Nov. 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17, 3-6 p.m. Nov. 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 19, noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 21.

Boxes will also be received at Mana Christian Ohana, 67-1182 Lindsey Road in Waimea from 9 a.m. to noon and 4-6 p.m. Nov. 14-18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 19 and 20 and from 8-10 a.m. Nov. 21.

Naalehu Assembly of God, 95-5678 Mamalahoa Highway, will collect the boxes form 5-6 p.m. Nov. 14-18, from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 20 and from 6-7 a.m. Nov. 21.

Solid Rock North, 55-595 Hawi Road, will receive boxes from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 14-19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 20 and 7-10 a.m. Nov. 21.

Learn to grow mushrooms

Sponsored by One Island’s Greenschool and Same Canoe, Zach Mermel will lead a mushroom workshop in North Kohala.

Attendees will learn how to grow two types of mushrooms using wood chips and tree stumps – shiitake on logs and king stropharia.

Class includes all materials and take home systems. It is from 1:30-5 p.m. Wednesday at Kokolulu Farm in Hawi.

Tuition including materials is $57.
