KAILUA-KONA — Beginning in November, overnight camping at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will come with a price. It was previously free.
According to a release from the park, the new fees are similar to public camping fees statewide.
Backcountry camping at all eight backcountry campsites will run $10, on top of the park entrance fee. Camping at all such sites requires a permit and stays are limited to three consecutive nights per site.
Campers may relocate to a different backcountry site for a fourth consecutive night, but the limit on consecutive nights spread across all backcountry sites is set at seven, or one week.
Fees can be paid at the Backcountry Office or online via pay.gov. More information can be found by calling 985-6178.
Kulanaokuaiki Campground, a front-country site off Hilina Pali Road with nine designated campsites offering drive-in access, will also cost $10 per night.
It will incorporate a stay limit of seven consecutive evenings with a maximum of six people per site. All sites are equipped with picnic tables and tent pads, and are claimed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Checkout is at 11 a.m. Fees can be paid at the campground’s self-registration station.
Pets are not allowed on any campgrounds, save for leashed pets on Namakanipaio Campground. Leashed service animals are permitted.
