Haunted Happenings: Your guide to Halloween events in West Hawaii
Editor’s note: The list of Halloween happenings is a long one. It ran in the Big Island Entertainment Scene section on Friday, but with so much spook going on today, tomorrow, and Monday, we thought we’d highlight the Halloween happenings in West Hawaii Today:
Multi-day events
One Slap Entertainment’s Haunted Attraction at Keauhou Shopping Center opened Thursday and runs tonight and Halloween night. The attraction opens at 5 p.m. Entry is $10; children younger than 8 are free.
A pumpkin patch and haunted corn maze will be open tonight and Sunday at Kohala Mountain Farm, between mile markers 12 and 13 on Kohala Mountain Road.
On Saturday, it is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a pumpkin patch, U-pick flowers, a hayride, petting zoo, pony rides, carnival games, local food vendors and more. In addition, there will be a Trick-or-Treat event for keiki in costume. Dagan Bernstein will perform from noon to 3 p.m. From 6-9 p.m., the farm’s corn maze and hayride will become haunted.
Sunday is the farm’s last day open to the public. It will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Today, Oct. 29
Kealakehe Elementary After School Programs hosts a Spooktacular Halloween Fair from 8 a.m. to noon. The free event features games and prizes, silent auction, face painting, jumpers, local produce, shave ice and more. Proceeds benefit after school programs. There will also be a costume parade for kids with treat bags. Info: 960-2343.
Hawaii Island Humane Society holds its annual Howl’ween Dog Walk slated at Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. All walkers with or without dogs are invited to participate and are encouraged to raise pledges to support shelter animals. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walks get underway at 8. The event includes contests, costumes, prizes and team challenges. Registration is free. Secure pledges can be made at FirstGiving.com/HIHS/howlween-dogwalk-2016.
Gertude’s Jazz Bar hosts the Groovin’ Ghouls jazz band from 6-9 p.m. with a costume contest at 9. There is a $5 entertainment fee. All are welcome; those younger than 21 cannot sit at the bar.
Banjy’s Paradise Bar &Grill’s seventh annual Halloween Gala is 8 p.m. to midnight in Waikoloa. There will be live music, food and a costume contest with prizes for first, second and third place. There is a $5 cover charge. Info: 883-3853.
Habaneros Grill offers live music by the Poi Dogs Band and a costume contest from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Trunk-o-Treat is 5:30-9 p.m. at the Kona Hawaii LDS Stake Center in Kailua-Kona. The free event includes a costume parade, games and prizes, a dance-off contest and trick or treating. Cars must be parked no later than 5 p.m. and ready to pass out candy by 6; no cars admitted after 5:30. Info: Arleen Callejo 960-2344.
Lanihau Center and IHOP Restaurant will take Kailua-Kona back to the 50s with car hop service by the Echo City Knockouts roller derby team. There will also be a 50s theme costume contest, with prizes for adults and keiki with the best retro outfits. Earl’s Garage Fright Shop is 6-8:30 p.m. at Kamuela Business Center in Waimea. The free spooky experience is created by kids who attend Earl’s Garage’s out of school hours’ program. The mechanically animated Halloween experience is open to everyone. Info: 885-6777, Katherine@tutushouse.org.
The Regency at Hualalai holds its annual Halloween Party from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the facility in Kailua-Kona. Free offerings include a haunted house, games, food, prizes and a keiki costume contest at 5 p.m. Info: 329-7878.
The Kailua-Kona Public Library Kid’s Room will celebrate Halloween with stories and a craft that will scare up giggles. The First Session from 2-3 p.m., offers light-hearted Halloween fun suitable for ages 3-6. The second session, from 3:15-4 p.m. will provide scarier fun for those ages 7-11. Info: 327-4327.
Waimea Town Market at Parker School hosts the annual Halloween Hounds Costume Parade. Prize ribbons will be awarded in several categories including funniest, scariest, most original and judges’ choice. Registration is at 9:30 a.m.; parade starts at 10. Info: Paul Johnston at 938-4540.
Keauhou Shopping Center’s Ohana Halloween Paina is from 5-9:30 p.m. The event features trick-or-treating, a race the reaper match, a haunted house, food, vendors, and keiki and adult costume contests. Bump City will provide live entertainment. Info: www.keauhoushoppingcenter.com.
Malamalama Waldorf School’s Trick-or-Treat Trail opens at 4 p.m. in Keaau. Located at 15-1834 Makuu Drive, this magical family event is for young keiki. Dress up in your costumes (no scary costumes please) and brung bag to collect special treats. Food available for purchase. Cost is $5 for individual, $20 for family.
Sunday, Oct. 30
Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Maestro Brian Dollinger, kicks off its performing season with “Symphonically Spooky” at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Tickets to the 4-6 p.m. concert are $25 and can be purchased at www.kamuelaphil.org.
Monday, Oct. 31
Kona Baptist Church’s Hallelujah Harvest Festival. runs 5:30-8:30 p.m. Among the festivities offered are party bouncers, games, candy and prize giveaways, live music, a cake walk and a free hot dog dinner. The church is located at 78-7156 Puuloa Road, at its intersection with Mamalahoa Highway. Info: 322-3355.
Timothy Ewing’s dead pirate-themed haunted house comes to life when darkness falls until 9:30 p.m. Halloween night in Kailua-Kona. The yard, located at 77-6518 Sea View Circle offers up an array of scares and frights. Admission is free, but a donation of canned or nonperishable food is suggested.
Queens’ MarketPlace hosts “Happy HalloQueen” from 5-7 p.m. The open-air shopping center will fill up with princesses, superheroes and fun creatures of all shapes and sizes, as tricksters promenade for free treats. Info: www.queensmarketplace.net, 886-8822.
Trick or Treat Parker Ranch Center in Waimea will be held from 5-7 p.m. Treats will be handed out at all the center’s stores, while supplies last. Info: www.parkerranchcenter.com.
The Hub Church, formerly Solid Rock Ministries, will hold its annual free Family Fun Night 5:30-8 p.m. at the Old Kona Airport Park. The free event will feature party bouncers, a climbing wall, games, refreshments, entertainment and a costume contest. Info: www.thehubchurchkona.com.
Kings’ Shops will host Tricks N’ Treats at 4 p.m. with safe trick-or-treating throughout the center. At 5:30 p.m., The Great Barusky offers a magic show, and at 6, there will be a children’s costume contest. Free cotton candy and popcorn will be available. Info: www.kingsshops.com.
“A Night of Halloween” is 5-8 p.m. at The Shops at Mauna Lani. This free event features safe trick -or-treating, keiki and adult costume contest, kids games, haunted 4D adventure ride, and a Polynesian hula and fire show. Info: 885-9501, www.shopsatmaunalani.com.

New Hope Waimea Church holds a family friendly, safe and fun Halloween event with free food, games, and candy from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Church Row in Waimea. Info: 885-5510.
The Korner Pocket Bar and Grill’s Halloween Party runs 8-11 p.m. in Kealakekua. A costume contest is at 10 p.m. with the best overall costume earning $250. There will also be prizes for the most creative/original costume and the best couple. A live DJ will provide entertainment. There is no cover fee; adults only.
Huggo’s on the Rocks’ Halloween Monster Bash is 8-9 p.m. in Kailua-Kona. The judging of the event’s costume contest, limited to the first 50 registrants and entries, will start at 9 p.m. Some $1,500 in cash and prizes will be awarded. Tapedek will provide live music. There is a $10 cover charge for this event.
Big Island Brewhaus’ ninth annual costume party is 6-9 p.m. in Waimea with a contest around 8-8:30 p.m. There is no entry fee. The restaurant is family friendly, however, there will be no costume contest for kids.
