WAIMEA — Teachers can learn new ideas for their classes at this experiential workshop Nov. 4-6 that uses garden-based science lessons and activities to explain NGSS science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas.
Located at Malaai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School, the class will relate these three key NGSS dimensions to the Hawaii School Garden Curriculum Map. Participants will apply the three dimensions to design and implement learning-garden science activities.

Sponsored by Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL), The Kohala Center and Malaai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School, the featured facilitator will be Dr. Art Sussman, as well as Amanda Rieux and the Malaai team, Nancy Redfeather and Dr. Koh Ming Wei.
Scientist Dr. Sussman is a senior project director at WestEd, and has developed many notable science education resources. He does science education presentations and workshops, particularly connected with global and local environmental issues. Sussman provides technical assistance with Next Generation Science Standards, state standards, professional development, science assessments, and regional and statewide networking. He has written and edited numerous books, and presents at conferences nationally and internationally.
The workshop is aimed at teachers and garden coordinators. The general public is also welcome. A registration fee of $100 per person includes dinner on Friday, lunch and snacks on Saturday and Sunday, and educational resources.
