HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Marine Corps is planning to use sites on a private island and Kauai for aviation training.
KHON-TV reports an environmental assessment says Hawaii tilt-rotor and helicopter aircraft crews need the sites for terrain-following or low-level flight training and confined-area landing.
Keith Robinson said on behalf of Niihau Ranch that this plan represents a continuation of his family’s support for the Department of Defense.
He said the family expects to discuss requirements and operation plans with USMC.
Plans reopen existing flight routes on Niihau and Kauai.
Up to four new routes would be added on Niihau.
Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho said officials are looking forward to working with those involved to learn about plans and how they may impact the community.
