HONOLULU (AP) — A new education center features artifacts from Japanese Americans who were confined at the Honouliuli Internment Camp in the ’40s.
KHON-TV reports families of people kept in prison-like conditions during World War II were among those who attended the Saturday opening of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s education center at Honouliuli National Monument.
Oral history videos and virtual tours of the monument are also included at the center.
President and executive director Carole Hayashino said students, teachers and community members can use the center to learn about the wartime experiences of Japanese Americans in Hawaii.
This project is among the cultural center’s efforts to preserve the history of the site.
The monument was established by President Barack Obama and dedicated last year.
Education center admission is free.
