Early Music Hawaii’s 2016-17 Concert Series opens Oct. 30 with Wayward Sisters, a Baroque ensemble playing on period instruments, and winner of the 2011 Early Music America Award.
They will be performing their concert, “The Naughty List: Music By Braggarts, Hotheads, Curmudgeons and Snobs!” at 3:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, located off Lako Street, in Kailua-Kona.
The Naughty List is a program of music penned by difficult men such as Matthew Locke, Tarquinio Merula, William Brade, Nicola Matteis, and even Dario Castello, who each left evidence of challenging temperaments and prodigious musicianship. Through baroque violin and cello, theorbo and recorder, the Wayward Sisters explores this intersection, bringing centuries-old composers vividly to life. They will also perform music by the well-known composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi.
Tickets are $25 for general admission and $10 for students with ID. They can be purcahsed online at www.earlymusichawaii.com or at the door.
Early Music Hawaii has brought early music performers to Kona since 2004. The nonprofit organization has grown steadily over the years and now boasts an annual concert series, which includes a choral and orchestra production in Honolulu with a mix of local and visiting professional musicians and singers; two visiting ensembles from the U.S. and Europe performing in Honolulu and Kona; and two small a cappella concerts performed on both islands by the Early Music Hawaii singers.
