WAIMEA — Kanu O Ka Aina and Punana Leo, two schools in Waimea, were each awarded a $500 scholarship from Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club this fall.
“It’s a new form of scholarships this year,” Ma’ulili Dickson said, the club’s president. “We are in partnership with the schools in community events and this will probably be an annual thing for both schools, as available. They knew which students really needed it so they chose the recipients.”
WHCC treasurer Chelsey Dickson presented the award at Punana Leo last Thursday. Kalani Forest, the club’s vice president, visited Kanu O Ka Aina in late September to award the scholarship to Head of School Mahina Paishon-Duarte.
“Further education is one of the civic club’s mandates but we are not limited just to Hawaiian students,” Ma’ulili said.
The money will be used towards the recipients’ education. The civic club provides additional scholarships throughout the year as money becomes available.
WHCC welcomes new members throughout the year for a membership fee of $20 annually. Contributions are also appreciated.
