WAIMEA — “Paint your world purple” is the theme for this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life event at Waimea Community Park. As a pink ribbon symbolizes breast cancer awareness, purple represents the action-packed annual event.
Registration begins next Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony with a Survivors and Caregivers Lap at 12-noon and a silent auction from noon-6:30 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony, to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to cancer, will take place at 7 p.m., followed by closing ceremonies.
Keiki can participate in a variety of activities during the day, including trick-or-treat and a Halloween costume contest.
The event gives local volunteers and participants from the community time to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease and take action to save more lives from cancer. The annual fundraiser benefits the American Cancer Society and individuals participate as teams of 10 or more in a variety of activities.
“Anyone who has ever battled cancer is invited to celebrate life and hope by joining the Relay For Life survivor activities,” Sancie De Mattos said, the event’s community manager. “The action taken represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives.”
Relay For Life events take place across the country, bringing together more than 4 million people from all walks of life to raise much-needed funds and awareness.
The cost to register in Relay for Life Waimea is $10 per person. The deadline to register is Saturday.
