Hawaii State Public Library System unveils new website

The Hawaii State Public Library System will officially launch a new interactive and easy-to-use website in a news conference on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Hawaii State Library.

State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich will present an overview and live demonstration of the website in Honolulu.

“The new website is designed to be a place where people can easily find, use, learn, and explore all of the opportunities that the Hawaii State Public Library System has to offer,” said Aldrich. “On Oct. 10, we invite everyone to log-on to the new HSPLS website at www.librarieshawaii.org and discover the possibilities.”

Post Offices closed, no mail delivery Monday

Postal facilities in Hawaii will observe the Columbus Day federal holiday on Monday, Oct. 10, by closing its Post Offices and not providing regular mail delivery. Columbus Day is celebrated in Hawaii as Discoverers’ Day.

While letter-type mail will not be delivered, packages will be delivered on selected metropolitan delivery routes on the holiday.

Businesses that will be generating large volumes of mail or packages on Columbus Day are encouraged to contact their local postmasters in advance to make arrangements for mail pickup.

Customers will be able to purchase stamps, weigh and post mail and ship packages on Columbus Day at any of the 16 self-service kiosks located throughout the state.

Weinberg Foundation donates $10K to mediation center

Kuikahi Mediation Center was one of 14 nonprofit organizations in the state to participate in The Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc.’s annual “Christmas in September” luncheon on Sept. 27 in Honolulu.

Foundation staff member Kathie Yamashiro presented the organization’s executive director, Julie Mitchell, with a check for $10,000,

“We were extremely grateful to be selected by Kathie for this honor,” said Mitchell. “The Weinberg Foundation’s generous contribution supports much-needed conflict resolution programs for low-income individuals.”

Since 1990, the foundation has provided over $312 million in grants to over 700 Hawaii nonprofit organizations helping the poor and needy.

Mediation services are provided on an affordable sliding scale, with no one turned away for lack of funds.
