Kona Dance and Performing Arts in Kealakekua performed its Evening of Tap Dance and Entertainment for sold out audiences Sept. 24-25.
Those in attendance enjoyed 90 minutes of tap dance, jazz, and musical theatre performances by keiki ages 7-18, as well as a performance by adult tap dance students Michelle Obregon, Roberta Smith and Nicholle Stover.
Choreographer Amanda Trusty opened the show by tapping a cappela and speaking on the mission of the new performing arts organization as well as creatively explaining the art of tap dance with demonstrations by intermediate tap students. The show culminated in a tap improvisation section and a medley sung by musical theater students called “The Classics,” full of standards sung by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Rosemary Clooney.
The event was a fundraiser for the nonprofit studio and successfully reached its goal through community sponsorship, ticket sales, and donations over the course of the weekend. Some 140 people attended each performance.
