Officer of the Year luncheon coming up
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will hold its annual luncheon to honor the Officer of the Year.
The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Tickets are $35.
Officer of the Year is selected from the committee’s Officer of the Month program. The previous 12 Officers of the Month will be honored: Darren Cho, Marco Segobia, Kaea Sugata, Brandon Mansur, Bradden Kimura, Peter Tourigny, Nicholas McDaniel, Jason Foxworthy, Brian Beckwith, Mike Thompson, Wyattlane Nahale.
Community members and businesses are invited to show appreciation for the police service. Donations of gifts, gift certificates or donations toward the luncheon are appreciated by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee.

Girl Scouts seek stories of its past
The Girl Scouts of Hawaii is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2017. To showcase the ways it has evolved over the past 100 years, the organization is asking for inspiring alumnae stories of past and present scouting.
Girl Scouts of Hawaii will share stories throughout its centennial that depict alumnae over the decades. The organization is collecting stories from all Girl Scouts of Hawaii alumnae, including multigenerational scouts, Gold Award recipients, and anyone else who has enjoyed outstanding experiences with the organization.

Flights planned over national park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announces the following upcoming flight plans this month.
• Between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. today to shuttle equipment and camp supplies from Mauna Ulu to Napau campsite for resource surveys.
• Sept. 22, time to be determined, to haul out old fence material from Mauna Loa along the boundary of Kapapala and Ka‘u Forest Reserve
• Sept. 15-16, between 6 a.m. and noon, for helicopter training in the Kahuku Unit between 2,500- and 6,000-foot elevation
• Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, aircraft inspection and flight near the summit of Kilauea
In addition, the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct flight operations over Kilauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.
The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
Boy Scout sign-ups this week
For boys in kindergarten through fifth grade, scouting packs in Holualoa, Kailua-Kona and Kealakekua are holding sign ups.
New scouts get an Estes rocket.
Sign-ups will be from 2-6 p.m. Friday at the Kealakekua McDonald’s and from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at McDonald’s inside the Kailua-Kona Target. Activities are also planned in Waimea.

VFW closed temporarily because of flood
Kona VFW Post 12122 will be closed for two to three weeks because of flooding caused by a broken line.
All activities are canceled until further notice, including the bar, dinners and meetings.
Saturday’s VFW meeting has been moved to the back open room at the Mad Marlin. Starting time is set for 11:30 a.m.

Elks announce Legacy Scholarships
Elks are offering 250 Legacy Awards, which are $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks members. A total of 250 awards are available. Applications are due Feb. 3.
Any child or grandchild (or stepchild, stepgrandchild, or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2014, or a charter member of a lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2014, is eligible. The Elk must also be paid up through March 31. If the applicant’s parent and grandparent are both Elks members, the applicant must apply through the parent’s Elks Lodge. Great-grandchildren are not eligible.
The applicant must be a high school senior and must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) by Dec. 31.
Legacy Awards may only be applied to accredited American schools, colleges or universities. Applicants from Guam, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Philippines may apply.
