Buddhist temple offers round table discussion
The Kona Hongwanji, a Pure Land Buddhist Temple community, offers a monthly round table discussion at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
Rev. Bruce Y. Nakamura, serving minister, will introduce a monthly theme to welcome the sharing of insights, reflections and readings by those interested. There is no fee.
The group focuses on the teachings of the Buddha and offers opportunity for participants to share and grow in diverse spiritual awakenings.
The temple is at 81-6630 Mamalahoa Highway just mauka of First Hawaiian Bank.

Brain Injury Support group meets
The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 14 at Hawaiian Rehab Services, just mauka of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.
Russ Parker, osteopathic physician, will share his personal experience with traumatic brain injury and experiences as a physician. He will also speak about nutritional treatment options.
Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public.

Hilo Walk to End Alzheimer’s planned
The Hilo Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be Saturday, Sept. 17 at Liliuokalani Park.
Registration is at 7 a.m., a ceremony will be held at 8 and the 3-mile walk begins at 8:15.
Every registered participant will receive a T-shirt after achieving the fundraising minimum of $100.
All funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer’s further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Kona library offers programs for keiki
In partnership with the Association for Library Service to Children and LEGO Systems, Inc., the Kailua-Kona Public Library has received more than 10,000 LEGO bricks and will provide Making Programs for playing, exploring, tinkering, experimenting, and developing creativity.
The program is at 3 p.m. Sept. 14. and is limited to the first 20 children ages 4-11 and their adult partners. Projects are the property of the library, and LEGO bricks will be reused at future programs. Participants may opt to have their creation on display for the month following the program.
Also, The Great Book Character Scavenger Hunt is running through Sept. 30. Kids in preschool through fifth grade are encouraged to hunt through the Children’s Section to find pictures of book characters. Get the names correct, and you will win a prize.

Funding to benefit 51 Hawaii companies
Fifty-one Hawaii companies will soon be able to streamline, improve, and optimize operations because of funding from the High Technology Development Corporation through Innovate Hawaii’s Manufacturing Assistance Program. The program awarded $1.9 million to help with companies with specific expenses related to manufacturing to foster economic and or employment growth in the state.
The majority of the funds, $1.7 million, were awarded for equipment purchases, while the balance will support energy efficiency measures, employee training and feasibility studies to help improve manufacturing facilities.
Six of the grants were for companies on Hawaii Island: Big Island Bees, Dragononi, Inc., Kona Brewery, Punaluu Bake Shop, Paradise Meadows, and Volcano Island.
