Two-step lessons offered in paniolo country
In keeping with Waimea’s paniolo heritage and rodeo weekend, the Waimea Ballroom Dance Club will start six weeks of country two-step lessons on Labor Day at the Kahilu Town Hall across from the Kahilu Theatre. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. the first two weeks only. Lessons are from 7 -8 p.m. Mondays followed by a half-hour practice mixer. No partner is necessary. Half annual dues for new members is $20. Lesson fee is $20 for the six weeks.
Instructor Lance Oliver promises fun for all and a hoedown on the last week.

VFW plans announced
VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street will host several events this week.
The activities committee meets at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Jean’s pasta will be served with salad and dessert from 5-7 p.m. Friday. Cost is $5 and the public is invited.
The VFW meeting is at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Paul Cooley, president of the Kona Lions Club, will speak.

Greenwell earns Q Grading certification
Quality assurance at Greenwell Farms has been enhanced as Jennifer Greenwell recently earned Coffee Quality Institute’s Q Grading certification.
Earlier this summer, Greenwell spent a week pursuing the certification as part of a seven-person group testing under the direction of Jodi Dowell Wieser. This was the first Q Grader and Training exam in Hawaii. Greenwell had to pass more than 20 test sections on coffee related subjects, such as green grading, roast identification, coffee cupping, sensory skills and sensory triangulation.
Prior to the exams, Greenwell engaged in coffee cupping training with Chai Neo, the other certified Q Grader at Greenwell Farms. Greenwell had to train her taste buds to respond to the sweet, sour, and salt areas of the tongue and together, Greenwell and Neo cupped coffee samples from around the world.
Greenwell and Neo are both qualified to cup and grade coffee based on the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s standards and methods. The Q Grading Certification program was created in 2004 to train coffee professionals to better identify the scientific tasting protocols, coffee grading, coffee knowledge and develop sharp sensory skills critical in identifying the common aromatic scents found in coffee.
