From Aug. 22 to Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

From Aug. 22 to Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 691 DUI arrests compared with 688 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.4 percent.

Officers in Hilo arrested nine drivers while Puna and Kona officers arrested seven in each district during the week, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

There have been 938 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,010 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been 14 fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in 16 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
