Noa Mamala, a 25-year-old man from Ocean View, has been charged with seven offenses after police found him in a stolen county vehicle.
Officers responded early Thursday morning to a report of a burglary at an office used by the Department of Public Works on the 81-6300 block in South Kona. Investigation revealed the building had been forcibly opened and the keys to a 2003 Ford F350 truck had been removed, along with the truck itself from the base yard.
On Friday afternoon, police responded to the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision after a report of a suspicious man in a large pickup truck. Officers arrested Mamala, who was in the truck when they located it and identified it as the missing departmental vehicle.
Upon his arrest, police found Mamala was in possession of methamphetamine. He was transported to the Kona cellblock where he remained until his initial court appearance Monday.
Mamala was charged Sunday with use of a government vehicle prohibited, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, promoting a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to appear and two counts of contempt of court. Bail was set at $32,300.
