WAIMEA — Parker middle and upper school students started the school’s 40th academic year with their annual campout on Aug. 17. Upper school students stayed on the grounds at Puakea Ranch in Kohala, while middle school students explored Kalopa State Park and returned to campus to sleep in tents.
Parker’s senior class coordinated games and activities for more than 140 upper school students and faculty. Students worked in teams comprised of members from each grade level to gain points through activities including field games, relay races and the school’s traditional tug-o-war battle. After a Western-themed dinner, the evening ended with a talent show, where each upper school class performed as a group.
The school’s campout tradition began in the 1980s to bring students together as a whole while strengthening bonds among each class. This same purpose remains today and is treated as a rite of passage by students.
