NORTH HAWAII — “One dollar or one can, if you can,” said Kahikina Ching, founder and organizer of the 15th annual Food Bank Feed-A-Thon.
He is referring to the 10-day drive, supported by Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union (HCFCU), that delivers an average of 90,000-plus pounds of food to Big Island families every year.
Food items as well as monetary donations will be accepted at Waikoloa Village Market on Aug. 26 and 27, Aug. 28 and 29 at KTA Waimea, and at the North Hawaii HCFCU branches in Kohala and Honokaa through Sept. 2.
“There are so many touching stories about the generosity we show our friends and neighbors in need, especially during the Feed-A-Thon,” said Tricia Buskirk, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union president and CEO. “Because the Food Basket offers assistance year-round through other programs — including the “We Got Your Back Supplemental Nutrition Program” for keiki and the “Senior ‘Brown Bags” Supplemental Nutrition Program” — it’s heartwarming to know that our members and staff can be there for others every single day.”
Giving even just $1 means a lot because money donated is used to purchase food at KTA, which lets Ching buy at wholesale prices on behalf of the Feed-A-Thon.
“I can feed six people for just $2,” he said.
To date, the Feed-A-Thon has provided more than 1 million pounds of food since the event began in 2002.
