Naimi Ike, an Olelo Hawaii study group, meets from 3:30-4:30 p.m. every Thursday at North Kohala Library in Kapaau.
All ages and skill levels are welcome to the free program. The class is a group of motivated learners interested in supporting each other toward fluency in the Hawaiian language.

Weekly workday planned at Amy Greenwell Garden
Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook will hold a volunteer work day from 9:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday for the foreseeable future.
Participants are encouraged to help with weeding and pruning and learn about native and food plants in the process. Snacks will be provided at pau hana. Wear work clothes.

HAM radio enthusiasts meet
The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
All members, friends and those interested in HAM radio are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share during the Indian (from India or Asia) themed potluck.

Mars simulation participants give presentation
Imagine you are on a mission to Mars with five other people: what strategies would you use to to ensure team cohesion and performance over periods of months or years? The crew of the HI-SEAS IV Mars mission simulation have been living that life for the past year. This weekend, they will exit the 1,200-square-foot dome on Mauna Loa that has been their home and laboratory and return to “Earth.” Join them at the Kona Science Cafe Monday, where the team will describe the mission, some of their individual research, and insights they gained from the experience.
This event is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St., Kailua-Kona. It includes time before and after the presentation for questions, answers, and networking opportunities.
A potluck is included with the event. Attendees should bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

Eddie Aikau essay contest is on
All seventh through 10th-grade students in Hawaii are invited to enter the Eddie Aikau essay contest.
Essays are accepted in English or Hawaiian. Applications must be postmarked Oct. 1.
The Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau was held Feb. 25. On that day, thousands of people around the globe looked on with wonder. Essays should discuss the question, “What is it about Eddie Aikau’s mana (strength, spirit, knowledge, power) that continues to attract worldwide attention?” And, “How has the mana of Eddie Aikau made a difference in your life?”
