Party planned for those born at North Hawaii Community Hospital
North Hawaii Community Hospital is celebrating 20 years of service to the community by inviting everyone born at the hospital since its opening in 1996 to a birthday celebration at 3 p.m. Friday.
Attendees will be treated to birthday cake and party favors and are asked to bring their baby photo to display.
The hospital will also celebrate Baby Friendly Day. North Hawaii Community Hospital was designated a Baby Friendly hospital by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund for offering an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies, and is one of only three in the state with this designation.
Hawaii’s first ‘hackathon’ planned
The Hawaii Annual Code Challenge, the state’s twist on a “hackathon,” kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday and Neighbor Island coders and innovators are invited to participate remotely.
The event will be live streamed at HACC.hawaii.gov.
In addition, they will be able to interact remotely. Anyone with a YouTube account will be able to login and ask questions in the chat during the question and answer sessions. Recordings of training sessions and the day’s events will be posted.
Presented in partnership with nonprofit Hawaii Open Data, the month-long event is being held to engage the local tech community in the modernization of Hawaii state government.
“We are reaching out to local talent to identify innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to government service needs, ultimately promoting an efficient, effective and open state government,” said state Chief Information Officer Todd Nacapuy. “The event is also a way to support and help develop our local IT workforce, which is critical to our state’s technological future.”

Dragonfly Ranch event planned
Dragonfly Aloha Sunday Club invites residents and visitors to an evening of music, dance, nonalcoholic cocktails, healthy food and fun conversation. The party starts at 4 p.m. Sunday.
MaxFX, aka Markus Fahrenberger (maxfxmusic.com), will create lounge music with live looping electric violin and didgeridoo.
Dragonfly Ranch proprietor Barbara Moore said, “Anyone wishing to wear fancy clothing is welcome to go wild. Of course, in Big Island tradition, casual is always ‘in.’”

Wardrobe workshop planned for women
During session 1, which is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, attendees will learn what styles give their figure types the best possible shape and how to use line, fabric, cut and color for their best looks.
During session 2, which is from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, attendees will learn how to have very few clothes and yet have something to wear to every occasion. They will use color, classic pieces and accessories to coordinate and expand an outfit.
There is no charge; donations are accepted.

AARP Smart Driver class planned
An AARP Smart Driver class is offered at 1 p.m Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.
This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eye sight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.
Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.
