The Donkey Mill Art Center will presents “Earth Elements: Gestures of Mutual Respect,” an invitational exhibition running today through Oct. 8.

An opening reception will be held 6-8 p.m. this evening at the Holualoa gallery. The exhibit showcases exceptional collaborative work with clay as the primary medium by more than 30 artists.

The show’s curators, Kate and Will Jacobson, have nearly 40 years experience as collaborating artists.

“Through this exhibition, we wanted artists to experience the extreme satisfaction of creating something beyond an individual vision and also the extreme challenge of negotiating a personal aesthetic in pursuit of synergistic beauty. Participating in this exhibition provides an opportunity for artists to re-energize and re-examine their individual approach to art making by experiencing an intimate awareness of another’s use of materials, techniques and pattern languages,” the Jacobsens said in a media release.

Since art is an essential element and visual manifestation of social change, the intention of “Earth Elements: Gestures in Mutual Respect” is to develop relationships and expand our worldview of “what is” to “what could be.” The act of publicly exhibiting negotiated co-creations helps viewers open up to new ideas and ways of thinking, seeing and knowing.

The Donkey Mill Art Center, home of Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture, is a 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission is to provide a stimulating environment that helps individuals discover, develop and expand their artistic abilities. The center, which reopens Tuesday following maintenance and cleaning, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
