KOHALA COAST — On Aug. 28, the public is invited to attend the Floating Lantern Ceremony — an Asian spiritual tradition that honors and remembers those who have passed. Hosted by North Hawaii Hospice, the event will be held at Coconut Grove at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii once again.
Beginning at 5 p.m. live music, hula, Taiko drummers and Hawaiian chanting will be performed, followed by a sunset lantern release into Pauoa Bay. The event concludes at 7:30 p.m.
“This is truly a unique and remarkable event,” shared Katherine Werner, MHA, RN and executive director of North Hawaii Hospice. “We were overwhelmed at the amount of participants who were able to enjoy last year’s event and are looking forward to partnering once again with the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii to honor and remember those who have passed.”
As the lanterns are released into the ocean, they take with them healing prayers. Lanterns are collected at the end of the release, the bases are saved and the papers are collected, dried and burned in a respectful manner.
Admission is free, and floating lanterns for inscribing messages and decorating will be provided for a suggested donation of $10. Food and beverage will be available for purchase, as well as complimentary self-parking. Carpooling is encouraged.
