HONOLULU (AP) — The director of the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies plans to step down at the end of his current term.

Retired Lt. Gen. Dan Leaf’s last day at the military-sponsored academic institute will be Oct. 31.

Leaf has led the Waikiki center since 2012. He was formerly an executive at defense contractor Northrup Grumman Information Systems. He previously was deputy commander at U.S. Pacific Command.

Deputy Director retired Brig. Gen. Jim Hirai will serve as the institute’s acting director until a new leader is selected.

The center brings military and civilian leaders from Asia-Pacific nations together in Honolulu to study regional and global security issues.

It aims to build trust and confidence among the region’s future leaders and decision-makers.
