A man apparently drowned Wednesday afternoon after jumping into Upper Wailuku River near Piihonua Falls in Hilo.
Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded about 3:45 p.m. to an area known as “Narnia” to find three people on the river bank who reported a family member had jumped into the river and had trouble swimming. Family members tried to assist, but were unable to hold onto him.
A helicopter, divers and ground personnel subsequently commenced a search. Divers found the body in about 30 feet of water on the river’s bottom, officials said in a press release.
