Verizon offers free Apple, Android classes
Verizon Wireless in Lanihau Shopping Center is offering free, in-store workshops on Android devices and Apple iPhones. Individuals who want to take advantage of these workshops must register at zwworkshops.verizonwireless.com/vzwworkshops/.
The Android: Getting Started class covers features of the Android and is geared for advanced users and beginners. The class is offered from 8-9 a.m. Aug. 20.
Attendees of Android: Doing More will delve deeper into the nuances of the Android. This hands-on workshop offers the tools and experience needed to master every aspect of an Android device. This class is available from 9-10 a.m. Aug. 21.
Apple iPhone: Getting Started covers features of the iPhone, including Maps, Siri, FaceTime and the app store. This class is offered from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and from 8-9 a.m. Aug. 27.
Apple iPhone: Doing More will answer frequently asked questions on troubleshooting. Verizon Experts will demonstrate advanced features. It is available from 9-10 a.m. Sunday and 9-10 a.m. Aug. 28.
Learn to protect yourself from vog
The talk, “Protecting Yourself From Vog” is offered from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Community Meeting Hale, Building G.
The free talk includes an update on Kilauea volcano’s current gas emissions and an introduction to new informational products that can protect people from vog (volcanic air pollution) based on a 2015 study involving West Hawaii participants. It is presented by Tamar Elias, U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and Claire Horwell, Durham University, United Kingdom.
HPM renovation underway
HPM Building Supply, 95-year old building supply company, is in the process of renovating its Luhia Street location in Kailua-Kona, with completion slated for mid-October. The store remains open.
The renovation to the 37,000–square foot warehouse, which began in March, will increase merchandising space by nearly 20 percent. The project will enhance the size and appeal of the pro service facilities, add a modern design center featuring cabinets and countertops and expand the moulding selection under covered storage in the drive-through lumberyard.
Retail-friendly gondola racking, new signage, brighter and more energy-efficient overhead LED lighting and a new central air conditioning system are included.
Employee recognition talk planned
The nonprofit Kuikahi Mediation Center hosts a free talk on Aug. 18 as part of their “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” Brown Bag Lunch Series. The free talks are from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Avenue in Hilo.
