Priscilla Cortez

Priscilla May Cortez, 61, of Hilo died July 3, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. He was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Hilo.

Services were held. Condolences may be posted at ballardfamilymortuaries.com.

She is survived by sons, Xavier Cortez of Hilo, George Santos of Colorado; daughters, Chanelle (Shandee) Santos of Glenwood; brothers Benjamin Cortez Jr. of Hilo; sisters, Evelyn (Patrick) Norbriga of Mountain View, Caroline Blakely of Hilo, Susan Gattis of Georgia, Sandra (Johnito) Santos of Mountain View; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Guillermo Afaga

Guillermo Cubangbang Afaga, 79, of Pahoa died July 20, 2016, at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born on April 20, 1937, in Bacarra, Philippines, he was a retired vegetable farmer in the Philippines and a member of the Iloko Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. service. Casual attire; flowers are welcomed. Cremation will be at at Dodo Mortuary.

He is survived by wife, Rosalina Afaga of Pahoa; daughters, Ermelyn (Zaldy) Acoba of Pahoa, Teresita (Henry) Ursolon, Gloria (Ruben) Nacario, Shirley Afaga and Rosenda (Reynaldo) Ocampo, all of Philippines; sons, Bhoy (Eugenia) Afaga and Renato (Gilda) Afaga, both of Philippines; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Genevieve Cran

Genevieve Bertlemann Cran, 87, of Pahala died July 14, 2016, at home. Born in Kealakekua-Kona, she was a retired secretary and a co-owner of Kapapala Ranch in Ka’u.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Kapapala Ranch for an 11 a.m. service. The family requests casual attire be worn and that flowers be omitted, but lei are welcome.

She is survived by son, John Cran Jr. of Keaau; daughter, Lani (Bill) Petrie of Pahala; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Darlene Paaluhi

Darlene V. Paaluhi, 68, of Kalaoa died July 29, 2016, at her home. Born Dec. 15, 1947, in Hakalau, she was a retired Kalanianaole Elementary School teacher and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Honomu Branch and Hawaii State Teachers Association.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Aug. 13 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hilo Stake Center for an 11 a.m. service. Graveside committal service and burial at 9 a.m. Aug. 15 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Edwin Paaluhi of Kalaoa; children, Scott Paaluhi of Oahu, Kelli Paaluhi, Kapai Paaluhi, Weston Paaluhi, Shayne Paaluhi and Sariah Paaluhi, all of Hilo; four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Suse Soares Jr.

Suse Soares Jr., 91, of Kailua-Kona died July 20, 2016, at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born July 8, 1925, in Honomakau, he was a housekeeper at the former Hilo Hotel, Waiakea Village Resort and Volcano House. He was a kumu hula in Hilo and Kohala halau, a Hawaiian language teacher, a volunteer at the Merry Monarch Festival in Hilo and also for the Aloha Week program and the King Kamehameha Day parade in Kohala, a judge for the Miss Filipina and the Miss Sampagita clubs.

Friends may call at 7 a.m. Aug. 13 at Kalahikiola Congregational Church in Kapaau for an 8 a.m. funeral service. A 1 p.m. entombment will be at Homelani Memorial Park in Hilo. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by sister, Leilani Belanio of Kailua-Kona; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lori Calip

Lori Anne Jones Calip, 60, of Mountain View died July 30, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 19, 1956, San Francisco, she was a production manager for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co. and member of the Puna Covenant Church.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 4 p.m. celebration of life. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed.

She is survived by husband, Elpidio Calip of Mountain View; sons, Kailani (Caitlino) Calip of Oregon, Kainoa (Mariah Milar) Calip of Mountain View; mother, Joanie Jones of Kailua, Oahu; sister, Lynni (David) Robinson of New Zealand; brother, Steve (Corinne) Jones of Kailua, Oahu; two grandsons; numerous nieces and nephews.

Toshio Hashimoto

Toshio Hashimoto, 86, of Hilo died July 26, 2016, at his residence. Born in Papaikou, he was a fish cutter for Suisan Fish Market and a member of the Taishoji Soto Mission.

Private services were held. Family requests no flowers and no memorial gifts.

He is survived by brother, Shigeo Hashimoto of Honolulu; sister, Ruriko Hatanaka of Tigard, Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews.
