Special Olympics Bus’ a Move
On Sept. 17th, Special Olympics West-Hawaii will host their “Bus’ a Move” Bus Pull competition at Kona Commons.
Teams of 10 will pull a Roberts Hawaii Charter Bus. Entry fee is $300 for a team of 10.
Teams have three categories to win: fastest pull, lowest combined weight, and an award will be given to the most enthusiastic team. Lowest combined weight event will use a lighter vehicle provided by Airgas. Strongmen and women should come out and show their muscle for a worthy cause.

Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple golf tourney
Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple will host a benefit golf tournament Aug. 28 at Kona Country Club. Format is two-person scramble, with a cost of $125 per participant. Mulligans available.

Kukio Blue Water Swim
On Sept. 24 the 11th Annual Kukio Blue Water Swim will be held.
After a two-year hiatus, the event is back and race organizers are looking to make it better than ever. The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim from Kua Bay to Uluweuweu Bay at Kukio starting at 8 a.m. A light breakfast and an awards ceremony will follow the race at Kikaua Point Park.
Cost is $40 per Individual (13 and older) and includes a Patagonia capilene shirt and swim cap. The cost is $20 per keiki (12 and under) and also includes a hat and swim cap.

Big Island Running Company hosts training programs
Big Island Running Company is offering two free training programs starting Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store.
Individuals interested in running a half marathon will be training for the 100 percent Pure Kona Coffee Half Marathon to be held on Nov. 12, while marathoners will train for the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 11.
Training runs will take place at Big Island Running Company’s Alii Drive store on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well. For more information, call or email Melissa at 327-9333 or melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.
Registration extended for Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation has extended the registration deadline for its 20th Annual Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament until Aug. 12.
Completed registration forms must be turned in to the Recreation Division office located at 799 Pi‘ilani Street in Hilo or postmarked by Aug. 12. Registration forms, along with tournament rules, are available at County Parks and Recreation facilities island-wide, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo and J. Hara Store in Kurtistown. The forms also can be found online at: hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation/.
The Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament will open Aug. 19, and end with weigh-ins conducted from noon until 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Honokaa Gymnasium.
Separate divisions are offered for keiki 5 to 12 years old, teens, men, women, kupuna at least 55 years old, and ohana or families. There also will be a barbless circle hook challenge. Entry fee is either $25 or $30 per person or family, depending on the division entered. Please make checks payable to “County Director of Finance.”
