Volcano Art Center will display the illustrations of Big Island wildlife artist John D. Dawson in an upcoming exhibit.

The exhibit, “National Parks Illustrations 1978 through 2016,” features illustrations and natural history studies designed for the National Parks Service over a 20 period.

As a part of the exhibition, Dawson will discuss his work at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Great Room of Volcano Art Center’s administrative offices. An opening reception starts at 6 p.m.

The exhibit will remain on display 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Sept. 2 at the center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. It is free and open to the public.

Over the past three decades, Dawson has completed major assignments and appeared in national publications for the National Geographic Society, National Wildlife Federation, Audubon Society, United Nations and the Imiloa Astronomy Center, among many others including private commissions.

The Aug. 17 presentation is part of Thursday Nights at the Center, an evening series focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and environment. The series is intended to inspire, enhance our art and life experience and foster community connections. It is free, but a $5 donation is appreciated.
