Lau is responsible, too
Yes, I distinctly heard Wally Lau admit at the Waimea political forum to knowing that the mayor’s use of the pCard was fraudulent, even somewhat criminal, for which he will be eventually tried in a court of law.
However, one thing that Mr. Lau has ignored: just reminding his friend, over and over again, that his use of the card was wrong and illegal was not a responsible action. Mr. Lau did not carry out his duty to take the card away from Mr. Kenoi. I don’t know about in Hawaii, but in most states Mr. Lau’s actions (or lack thereof) amount to his being an accessory to that theft. If Mr. Lau and Mr. Kenoi are truly friends, and Mr. Lau knew that his friend would quite possibly be punished for what I believe may be an addiction to the use of credit cards, Mr. Lau allowed Mr. Kenoi to continue its use, thereby digging himself in deeper and deeper.
I do like both Mr. Kenoi and Mr. Lau. They seem to be very nice people. But as a taxpayer and responsible citizen, I don’t quite understand why Mr. Lau’s actions are also not being prosecuted. That money belongs to those who work hard and pay their taxes, not to the holders of the pCards.
