KAILUA-KONA — The deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 13 primary election was Thursday.
Elections officials made it even easier to register to vote, with two days of drive-thru registration Wednesday and Thursday. At the Kona Kmart, the lone location offered in West Hawaii, dozens of people registered ahead of the 4:30 p.m. deadline.
The number of registered voters on Hawaii Island, as of mid-day Thursday, was 109,932, according to the Hawaii County Elections Division. That’s up about 300 from Monday.
“It’s been very busy, better than in the past,” said Donna Oba, a volunteer with the League of Women Voters helping to register voters ahead of the deadline. “A lot of young people.”
Oba said volunteers registered about 100 people between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kona Kmart.
The general election is Nov. 8.
