Hawaii Island police arrested 19 people on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant between July 4 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The most arrests were made in Kona, with 12, followed by three in South Hilo, two in South Kohala and two in Puna, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 570 DUI arrests compared with 523 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.
There have been 766 major accidents so far this year on public roadways, compared with 798 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
There have been 11 fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 12 deaths so far this year. At this time in 2015, there were 10 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 13 fatalities.
