Roberta Muller will be stitching up a storm with two quilting workshops July 16 at Volcano Art Center amid the nonprofit’s first-ever quilt show.

From 10 a.m. to noon and then again from 1-3 p.m., Muller will teach “Learn to Quilt by Hand.” Cost is $10, which covers a honu (turtle) design kit featuring applique, fabric, batting, backing, needles and thread.

What’s involved in hand quilting? Stitching. A quilter can use several stitches. A stab stitch drives the needle through the fabric from the right side, then pushes it back up through the material from the other side. Another type called a rocking stitch, uses a thimble. The quilter has one hand on top of the quilt, while the other hand is located beneath the piece to push the needle back up. A third stitch is called “loading the needle,” and involves making four or more stitches before pulling the needle through the cloth.

Roberta will be demonstrating how to use these basic stitches that can help quilters achieve a variety of hand-finished quilts.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Muller learned the art of Hawaiian quilting as a young girl from her grandmother, Therese Quinn. Muller began serious quilting in her 20s and hasn’t stopped since. She is currently teaching at Kilauea Kreations II in Hilo and at her studio at home in Hilo.

There is a limited number of seats for the workshops. Register online at www.volcanoartcenter.org or by calling the center at 967- 8222.
